From the East side of the Continental Divide (when Cottonwood Pass is open):

On Hwy 24, go to Buena Vista (north of Salida, south of Leadville).

In Buena Vista, turn West at the main intersection; Road 306 toward the Divide. Stay on this road until it dead ends at the Taylor Reservoir. (about 1 hour)

At the Taylor Reservoir, turn right, North, on County Road 742. This road will turn into a dirt/gravel road. Go across a bridge at Texas Creek. From here drive 2.2 miles to Illinois Creek. You will see several mailboxes on your right at Illinois Creek.

Turn right at these mailboxes. Drive one and a half miles up the bumpy, dirt road crossing the creek twice. Follow the signs to AE Base Camp. The main lodge is the building with the large porch.

From the West side of the Continental Divide (or if Cottonwood Pass is closed):

Go to Gunnison on Hwy 50 (west of Salida, east of Montrose).

Turn North onto highway 135. Drive 10 miles to Almont.

Go right on County Road 742 toward Taylor Reservoir. Drive up the canyon (40-50 minutes), then up and around the reservoir. The road will turn to dirt/gravel. You will go across a bridge at Texas Creek. From here drive 2.2 miles to Illinois Creek. You will see four mailboxes on your right at Illinois Creek.

Turn right at these mailboxes. Drive one and a half miles up the bumpy, dirt road crossing the creek twice. Follow the signs to AE Base Camp. The main lodge is the building with the large porch.
